Councils gardeners
An important task of October is planting winter garlic. Many gardeners are in a hurry to do it early, in order not to poke around in the soil wet from the rain. And yet you should not hurry with the landing. If you focus on the weather of the last years, the second half of October is the most favorable time for planting this crop.
Garlic must take root before the onset of frost. He will do the rest next season. It happens that it is better to plant garlic in November than in September. Garlic can be planted without problems even in rainy weather, if you prepare in advance a not very wide garden bed (such that you can plant from the path, do not trample dug and cooked soil).
And in order not to do the landing grooves in the wet ground, prepare a planting stake with a depth gauge in advance. You can just drive a large nail at a distance of 10 cm from the end of the stake. Gardeners make landing pits for teeth and an ordinary glass bottle, turning it neck down.
The plot chosen for garlic (and it can be planted after legumes, pumpkin crops, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage), is filled with organic matter (before a bucket of compost or humus) with complex mineral fertilizers or wood ash, dug up on a bayonet spade, leveled. Shoots of weeds that may appear in a few days, we remove, having worked with a rake in different directions.

If for some reason the planting of garlic is delayed, you can divide the heads into teeth and choose the largest, without signs of disease, put them in some dishes, cover them with a cloth and put them in a cool place (on the veranda, loggia, balcony). After a week or two, the roots will be marked on the bottom of the teeth, ie, the rooting process will begin even before disembarkation.
If you suspect that garlic is infected with fungal diseases, it is advisable to treat the teeth with a drug maximizer before planting: 2 ml per liter of water. After half an hour of aging, the garlic is dried. In the same way, it is possible to process onion sets intended for sub-winter planting (we select the smallest onions, which are likely to dry out during winter storage). We will plant onions later than garlic, but we will prepare the beds and the compost, which we need to sprinkle on its surface after planting.
So, everything is ready for planting garlic. It remains to make holes in the garden with a stake (or bottle) after about 10 cm in the row and after 25 cm between the rows, spread out the teeth (but do not press in) and fill them in to close the landing holes. You can sprinkle it with compost.
Late plantings should be immediately mixed with a layer of compost or humus, so that the soil does not cool down longer, and the cloves have the opportunity to root well. If we plant on time, it is better to grind after the first frost in order to slow down the development of garlic in the cooled ground until spring.
But in any case, it is necessary to mulch to protect the soil on the garlic bed from fast freezing in cold, snowless weather and fast thawing during periods of winter thaws. Be sure to provide a drain for water - thawed and rain to protect the garlic from soaking.
Prepare the beds in advance and for the wintering of carrots, parsley, dill. In slushy weather, digging and sowing grooves is problematic.
To dig or not to dig?
The most difficult autumn work is digging the soil. But now, more and more loudly, objections are heard against the annual land shoveling on the plots. True, many summer residents find it difficult to imagine how heavy clay soils, fairly compacted as a result of abundant vegetative irrigation, can be left without treatment.

Even those gardeners who have been purposefully improving the soil in their plots for a long time still dig up the beds every few years: despite the constant mulching, loosening the top layer with a flat cutter, the soil is compacted. Ploskorezom it is possible to do on light soils.
And in the winter to mulch the beds of mowed and dried grass, straw. In the spring, mulch is not harvested, but only pushed to make the sowing furrows. On such beds, the natural soil structure is not destroyed; better preserved rain and snow moisture - the most favorable for the development of plants; more useful microflora, higher number and activity of earthworms.
The advantages of "neperekopki" are enough to start the experiment with at least one bed.
