Councils gardeners
Many gardeners completed garden affairs back in October. But there are those who still do not return from the empty baskets from the dacha.
Until November, leek, Brussels sprouts, and daikon remained in the garden. All this is to be removed.
Leek it is important to dig very carefully, so as not to damage the stems. We cut two thirds of the length of all leaves, contaminated and damaged, remove. The total length of the stem with leek leaves, which is stored, should be about 25 cm. The roots of the leek are also pruned, approximately, by half.
If the apartment has a glazed loggia or balcony, you can store leek there, putting it in a box and covering it with something dark. Lowering the temperature to minus 5 degrees leeks are not terrible.
In the basement leek is instilled in the sand. It is done this way: the bottom of the box is sprinkled with a five-centimeter layer of sand, vertically installed leek stems and sprinkled with a ten-centimeter layer of moist clean sand. The basement, of course, must be cold: the optimum storage temperature leek plus 1 - minus 1 degree.

In this microclimate, the leek can stay fresh up to six months. Of course, in our basements, the temperature “jumps” in the winter, reacting to thaws and frosts, therefore, the leek may not be stored for such a long time, but it is still possible to prolong its consumption.
Well kept leek in the fridge. To do this, first select the healthy stalks that are cooled, then immediately pack several pieces into the pre-cooled perforated (with holes) plastic bags, too, and put them in the fridge in the vegetable compartment.
Store leek and frozen. Leaves and stems are carefully washed, dried on a towel, cut, laid out in small portions in bags and frozen.
Those who have electric dryers, can dry part of the crop. You can dry the previously washed and chopped leek in the oven at about 50 degrees.
Some plants can be left on the garden - for spring salads and soups. So that they are well wintered, they are simply highly spud. Leaves do not cover anything.
You can leave a few parsnip roots in the garden - also for spring vitamins. They pezimuyut great on the garden bed. In the spring we dig them up as early as possible: before they begin to spend nutrients on the growth of young leaves.
Do not further delay cleaning daikon. Long-fruited varieties, especially on heavy soils, are dug out with a pitchfork or shovel, and not pulled out. If the daikon is clean, just dry it slightly so that the sticking lumps of soil.
Strongly polluted root vegetables should be carefully washed (but not rubbed!), Dried and, after cutting the leaves, immediately put in storage. Daikon, packed in boxes, can be covered with sand or covered with plastic wrap.
Root vegetables can be packaged in plastic bags, making holes in them for access of air. It is even more convenient if you pack it according to the needs of the family: the contents of one bag should be enough for a week or two (depending on how often you go to the basement for supplies). At temperatures from 0 to plus 5 degrees, daikon is beautifully stored until spring.

If in November we plan to regularly visit the country, we can not rush to clean the Brussels sprouts: lowering the temperature to minus 5-7 degrees is not dangerous for it, and kochanchiki after light freezing becomes only tastier.
Kochanchiki can be cut as needed. But if the leaves on the stem began to fall, it is time to clean the Brussels sprouts completely.
To keep the roaches longer, we cut down the cabbage stalk at the root collar, cut off all the leaves, remove the growing point, put it in plastic bags and put it in the refrigerator.
If kochanchiki not grown enough, the plants of Brussels sprouts, pulling out with a root, drop in the basement. Leaves and with this method of storage are deleted. Kochanchiki gain weight due to the stump. Modern housewives prefer to keep Brussels sprouts frozen.
