Garden on the windowsill
By the New Year, many gardeners appear on the window sills "room" greens of onion, parsley, chard.
Those who have the opportunity to equip the artificial lighting of the plants, grow more serious vegetables on the windowsill (or on the heated loggia, veranda). Most often on the winter window sills you can see cucumbers.
For the successful development of cucumbers they need at least twelve hours of light day, a favorable microclimate (temperature not lower than 20 degrees, humid air, no drafts).
First, it is better to sow the seeds in small cups (one good seed to a depth of 1-1.5 cm), so that later, in the stage of 3–4 true leaves, transfer grown plants to four-liter containers with drainage holes and a layer of fine claydite or sand at the bottom. The pot is not filled to the very top, so that later it can be poured into the grown plants of fresh earth.
The soil mixture can be prepared by yourself from garden soil, humus or compost stored at the dacha, and purchased peat by adding a glass of wood ash to a bucket of the mixture, a teaspoon of ammonium nitrate, superphosphate, potassium sulfate. Consider in advance what we will attach growing shoots to.
Varieties of cucumbers for growing indoors choose parthenocarpic, early ripening, with small fruits. In the store you can find hybrids, in the annotation which indicates that they are grown in the room (for example, Balcony).
It is better not to sow even a medium-ripening variety in a room: the harvest will have to wait too long. In residential premises, cucumbers in the fruiting phase enter about twice as long as in the open field or greenhouse. For example, early hybrids sown in the first half of December, under the most favorable conditions, will produce the first fruits only at the end of winter.
Cucumbers in the room can not be grown, if you do not make sure that the leaves and roots do not suffer from dryness: we water, not allowing the soil coma to overdry, spray the leaves every day.
Two weeks after the emergence of seedlings, we feed the cucumbers: a teaspoon of ammonium nitrate, superphosphate and magnesium sulfate for 5 liters of water. A glass of top dressing is spent on five plants. Days after ten feeding we repeat, increasing the solution consumption: a glass for two plants.
We feed fruit-bearing cucumbers every 7-10 days, adding two glasses of nutrient solution to each plant. Such a menu for cucumbers can not be considered mandatory. It is possible to use complex organic-mineral fertilizers for fertilizing.
Since cucumbers in a room are grown in a limited amount of soil, with a lack of sunlight, it is especially important to form plants. In the stage of 4-5 true leaves of the plant we pinch the top of the head. Side shoots, letting them form 4-5 leaves, also pinch. You can remove the whiskers to reduce nutrient intake by the plant.
With one plant with good care you can get up to 15 medium-sized fruits. To feed the family such a crop can not, but the joy will bring a lot.
And in order to prolong the harvest period, in January we sow the next batch of cucumber seeds. When the December sowing cucumbers are exhausted, the January pickups will take over the baton.
If your apartment has a warmed heated loggia, you can “break” a real winter garden by planting different greens, cherry tomatoes, small-fruited hot peppers into the pots of the same color, sow the salad.
It is very important that the plants were not only warm (+18 +20 degrees), but also light enough, so you will have to equip additional lighting with fluorescent lamps.
