Juniper Horstmann - one of the most original species of this coniferous shrub. Landscape designers appreciate it for the unusual, weeping shape that the plant acquires as an adult. Due to this, a rather tall vertical bush becomes sprawling and can occupy a decent area. What else is different plant and what it loves?

Juniper Horstmann belongs to the vertical varieties, but every year its widely spaced branches lower their tips, thus forming a beautiful weeping crown. It is noteworthy that with a total height of more than 2 m, the diameter of the dense crown is almost equal to the “growth” of the shrub, while maintaining a conical shape, wide at the base.

Horstmann does not grow very quickly: over the year the increase is no more than 15 cm, but it is a long-lived and is able to decorate the site for 200 years.

Reddish twigs are covered with small ones, a little more than 1 cm in length, but with hard and thorny needles of dark green color. They have three faces and do not crumble for more than three years. In May, the shrub blossoms with yellow (male) and greenish (female) inflorescences, called spikelets in botany, and then sets fruit - small (maximum 0.7 cm) fleshy cones. Young lumps are green, and when mature, they acquire a grayish tint.

For round shape and small size cones are called juniper berries.

Horstmann prefers well-lit places, but is able to grow in light partial shade. The variety is absolutely undemanding to the composition of the soil, it takes root even on stony ground, but it absolutely does not tolerate saline and overmoistened soil.

In the care of the juniper is simple, it is enough to give him just a little attention, namely:

  • Regularly watered in dry summer.
  • Once a year, in May, feed the mineral complex.
  • In the spring, treat with insecticides to prevent the occurrence of pests (Aktar), as well as fungicides for diseases (early).
  • The variety has a high frost resistance, but sprawling branches can be affected by the weight of the snow cover, so for the winter it is better to pick them up and fix them around the central trunk with a rope.
