How pomelo grows
I like to experiment and plant everything from which you can get bones or seeds. Now it was the turn of the huge broom, just got a good fruit with large bones. I planted a few pieces in a pot, went up together and slowly growing up. All anything, but then I heard that the plants can stretch more than 10 m in height. Now I sit and think, what should I do with such giants in an apartment? Please tell us how pomelo grows? Is it possible to limit its height and how long to wait for fruiting?
Pomelo - a wonder among exotic fruits that are brought to us from the warm edges. Some are afraid to buy these huge fruits with a distinctive citrus scent, for fear of their mysterious size and not knowing what they taste like. However, these fears are completely groundless, because the fruit is very edible and tasty, moreover, it feels good at home, because we grow lemons and tangerines in pots.
However, before hiding a large stone in the ground, it is worth knowing how a pomelo grows and what it represents as a culture. Looking at very large fruits, it is not difficult to imagine that they will not grow on a small bush, and this should be taken into account when planning to grow exotics in a tub. However, let's do everything in order.
What grows pomelo?
Pomelo fruits grow on an evergreen tree that can blow up to 15 m in height. The tree has a beautiful rounded crown and large leaves of a rich green color with a glossy shine. On the branches there are small spines, but there are also non-bearing varieties. The tree fructifies several times a year: first, large white inflorescences bloom on the branches, and then in their place in 5-7 months tasty fruits weighing up to 2 kg ripen (some specimens weigh up to 10 kg).
Edible fruit pulp: the structure is similar to the orange, but with larger slices, covered with white hard film. On top of pomelo thick rind. The color and shape of the fruit depends on the variety. Most often on our counters fall such species:
- spherical Khao horn, flesh is sweet, white, yellow-green skin;
- pear-shaped Khao namphung, the flesh is yellow and sweet, the peel is green-yellow;
- flattened ball Khao paen, white flesh, sour, yellow shell;
- pear-shaped Khao phuang, the flesh is yellow, sour, the peel is green with yellow;
- spherical Thongdi, the flesh is sweet, pink in color, the skin is green.
The fruit itself belongs to the citrus family and is a separate species. Opinion that pomelo is a hybrid of grapefruit, erroneous. On the contrary, it is the grapefruit obtained from the crossing of pomelo and orange.
Features of growing pomelo at home
As a thermophilic culture in the local climate, the pomelo does not grow, but it feels very good in indoor conditions, as well as in heated greenhouses. It reproduces by seeds that are planted in nutrient soil.
By providing the plant with good lighting, heat, regular watering and air humidity of at least 60%, you can get a beautiful ornamental tree. It is easy to form, so you can restrain active growth and give the plant a compact room size. The only minus of the broom - flowering and fruiting will have to wait at least 10 years. If you are ready to wait, feel free to plant a tropical guest and enjoy a tasty harvest.
